DFW FIRST BIRTHDAY
CAKE SMASH &
SPLASH SESSION
Celebrate your baby’s first birthday with a fully styled cake smash and splash experience at our Southlake studio.
Cake Smash & Splash Session
Your baby's first birthday is such a special milestone—and a Cake Smash & Splash Session is one of my favorite ways to celebrate it!
Cake smash sessions are one of my most popular offerings at my Southlake photography studio. From sweet birthday portraits and a fun cake smash to an adorable splash in the tub, each session is designed to capture your baby's personality and all the little details that make turning ONE so special.
Located in Southlake, Texas, July Angel Photography welcomes cake smash families from across Dallas-Fort Worth, including Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine, Keller, Trophy Club, Westlake, and surrounding DFW communities.
With a large collection of cake smash themes, backdrops, props, outfits, cake stands, and accessories available in the studio, we'll work together to create a setup that feels perfect for your little one's first birthday celebration. Each Cake Smash & Splash Session includes three thoughtfully planned parts: clean birthday portraits before the cake, the cake smash itself, and a playful splash bath finale. This allows us to capture a complete first birthday story filled with sweet expressions, growing personalities, messy fun, and genuine smiles.
Just bring the cake and your birthday baby. I’ll take care of almost everything else!

The Cake Smash & Splash Experience
Part One: Clean Portraits and Playtime
The session begins with clean portraits before the cake is introduced. Your baby will have time to become comfortable with the studio, explore a few toys, and interact naturally with the set.
This portion is especially important because not every one-year-old enjoys cake. Some babies dislike the texture of frosting, do not want to touch the cake, or simply have no interest in eating it.
Photographing the clean portraits first ensures that we capture a beautiful collection of happy expressions even if your baby does not enjoy the cake smash. It also gives your baby time to warm up to the photographer and the studio environment.
Part Two: The Cake Smash
Once your baby is comfortable, we bring out the cake and begin the cake smash.
Some babies immediately dive into the frosting, while others carefully inspect the cake before tasting it. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy a cake smash. Every baby responds differently, and those genuine reactions are what make the photographs so special.
Parents will provide a small, simple cake. I will coordinate the cake stand, cake topper, backdrop, props, and other styling elements around your selected theme and color palette.
Part Three: The Splash Bath
After the cake smash, your baby will finish the session with a splash in a little bathtub.
The bath portion is often when babies give us their biggest smiles. They can splash, play, and enjoy a familiar activity after exploring the cake. It also creates a fun ending to the gallery—and helps clean up all that frosting!
A bathtub, swim diaper, towels, and the basic splash setup are provided.
Thoughtfully Designed Cake Smash Themes
Every cake smash setup is carefully planned around your chosen theme and preferred colors.
I often combine a custom-designed backdrop with a small number of real props. The backdrop creates a detailed and imaginative environment, while physical toys and props add texture and give your baby something safe to explore.
This design approach is also practical for active one-year-olds. Babies love to crawl, pull, and move everything around them. If the entire background were constructed with real decorations, babies could quickly become distracted, crawl away from the photography area, or pull the set apart.
A custom backdrop keeps the scene visually consistent, while carefully selected real props provide natural interaction without overwhelming your baby. The finished images feel detailed and dimensional, but your child remains the focus of every photograph.
What Should You Bring?
Please bring:
Your birthday baby
A small 4–6 inch cake
Any special item you would like included
Your baby’s favorite snack or comfort item
Any other baby essentials you may need
For most themes, a simple cake photographs best. However, certain themes—such as Winnie the Pooh, Harry Potter, or another character-inspired setup—may work beautifully with a specially designed cake. Please avoid oversized cakes, very dark frosting, heavy fondant, and decorations that may be unsafe for your baby.
Please Check for Allergies Before the Session
The cake is not included. Families provide their own cake so they can choose a bakery and ingredients that are appropriate for their baby.
Please review all cake ingredients and confirm any known food allergies or sensitivities before the session. A cake smash should not be your baby’s first exposure to ingredients that may cause an allergic reaction. If you have any concerns, please consult your pediatrician and baker before ordering the cake.
What If My Baby Does Not Like the Cake?
Not every baby loves cake—and that is completely okay! Some babies happily dive into the frosting, while others are unsure about the taste, texture, or feeling of frosting on their hands. A few babies may even become upset or cry when the cake is introduced.
If you strongly prefer not to have crying photographs with the cake, consider safely letting your baby try a small amount of similar cake and frosting at home before the session. This can help you understand how your baby responds to the taste and texture.
However, the purpose of a cake smash is to capture your baby’s genuine experience. Smiles, curiosity, hesitation, surprise, serious expressions, and even a few tears are all real reactions worth remembering.
Before the cake is presented, we will already have photographed your baby in a clean outfit while playing, exploring the set, and interacting with toys. This helps your baby become comfortable in the studio and ensures that your gallery includes plenty of happy, clean portraits—even if the cake is not a favorite.

Optional Family and Sibling Portraits Add-on
My regular portrait session is $780 for 10 images, but family and sibling portraits may be added to your Cake Smash Session at a special rate of $50 per image.
Family portraits are photographed at the beginning of your session, while everyone is fresh and ready for photos. We can capture a beautiful mix of the whole family, baby with Mom and Dad, siblings together, and other meaningful combinations you'd love to have before moving on to your baby's individual portraits and cake smash.
These images are especially meaningful for a first birthday. The cake smash celebrates your little one turning ONE, while family portraits capture something just as special—what your family looked like at this beautiful stage of life. ❤️
$50 Per Selected Image
Possible portrait combinations include:
The entire family
Baby with siblings
Mommy and baby
Daddy and baby
Parents with baby
Individual sibling portraits
Other requested family combinations
There is no need to decide on the exact number of images in advance. A proof gallery will be provided after your session so you can select your favorites.
I do recommend letting me know approximately how many family images you may be interested in before your session, so I can plan enough time for the family portrait portion and photograph a nice variety of poses and combinations for you to choose from.
For parents and one child with only a few requested combinations, approximately 5–10 minutes is usually enough. Sessions involving siblings or multiple combinations generally require 15–30 minutes.
Because family portraits are photographed before the cake smash, we try to keep this portion relaxed but efficient. One-year-olds have limited attention and energy, and we want to save their happiest, most cooperative time for the main cake smash experience.
A separate proof gallery will be sent to you after the session. You may select your favorite family portraits and purchase only the images you love, with no minimum purchase requirement.
The proof gallery will typically include more poses, expressions, and combinations than you plan to purchase, giving you a comfortable variety from which to choose. Your selected portraits will then receive detailed professional retouching and will be delivered together with your final cake smash gallery. Final Gallery
Your cake smash package includes a complete photographer-selected gallery, typically containing 30–40 professionally edited digital images.
The final number may vary depending on your baby’s participation and the natural flow of the session. Every delivered photograph will be individually edited in the signature July Angel Photography style.
The photographer will select the strongest images based on expression, connection, variety, focus, lighting, and overall artistic quality.
How to Book Your Cake Smash Session
1. Submit an Inquiry
Complete the contact form on my website with your contact information, your baby’s birthday, preferred session dates, and any theme or color ideas you may have.
I will respond within 24 hours. After the initial inquiry, most planning will take place by text message for quicker and more efficient communication.
2. Choose Your Date
I recommend reserving your session approximately two months before your baby’s first birthday. The photoshoot may take place anytime after your baby turns 11 months old, allowing enough time for the final gallery to be completed before the birthday party.
Weekend availability is limited and should be reserved as early as possible. Weekday sessions offer greater flexibility, and the start time may sometimes be adjusted closer to the session if your baby’s nap or meal schedule changes.
3. Select Your Theme and Styling
We will discuss your preferred theme, colors, backdrop, props, and outfit options. You may select from themes already available in the studio or request a new customized theme.
Requests for a completely new theme should be submitted at least one to two months before the session. An additional customization fee may apply if a new backdrop or specialty props must be purchased.
4. Reserve Your Session
Once the date and session details are confirmed, a $200 retainer plus applicable sales tax is required to reserve your appointment.
The remaining balance for the Cake Smash & Splash Session is due on the date of the session.
5. Prepare for the Session
Before the session, we will finalize the outfit and cake details. The studio provides coordinating props, baby-friendly toys, cake stands, cake toppers, studio wardrobe options, a bathtub, a swim diaper, towels, and basic cleanup supplies.
Families normally bring a small 4–6 inch cake. If purchasing or transporting a cake is difficult, particularly for an out-of-town family, cake purchase assistance may be available with advance notice, approval of the cake and ingredients, a signed waiver, and reimbursement of the actual cake cost.
6. Enjoy the Experience
The session begins with clean portraits and playtime, followed by the cake smash and a splash bath finale. This gives your baby time to become comfortable and ensures that we capture happy, clean portraits before introducing the cake.
Your package includes the full photographer-selected Cake Smash & Splash gallery, typically consisting of 30–40 professionally edited digital images. There is no proofing or image-selection process for the cake smash portion.
If family or sibling portraits are added, a separate proof gallery will be provided after the session. You may select and purchase only the family portraits you love, and that portion will be invoiced after your selections are submitted.
Cake Smash & Splash Session FAQs
-
I recommend reserving your cake smash session approximately two months before your baby’s first birthday. This provides a better chance of securing your preferred date and gives us enough time to plan the theme, backdrop, outfits, props, and other personalized details.
The photoshoot may be scheduled anytime after your baby turns 11 months old. Photographing the session a few weeks before the first birthday allows enough time for the final gallery to be completed before the birthday party.
Scheduling toward the earlier part of this window can also make the session easier. Younger babies are often slightly less mobile, making it easier to keep them comfortably positioned within the setup before they become fast crawlers or confident walkers. Every baby develops at a different pace, so we will also choose a time that works well with your baby’s typical nap and meal schedule.
-
Your booking will show a one-hour session, but my birthday sessions are never strictly timed and never rushed. Every baby is different, and I always follow your little one's pace.
Around the first birthday, many babies begin to experience stranger anxiety and may need a little extra time to feel comfortable in a new environment. Some little ones are ready to smile and play right away, while others may need 15–20 minutes just to warm up—and that's perfectly okay! We give them the time they need rather than rushing straight into pictures.
A typical Cake Smash & Splash Session takes about one hour. If you are adding family or sibling portraits, please plan for approximately 1–1.5 hours, as we will photograph those first before moving on to your baby's individual portraits, cake smash, and splash.
My goal isn't to finish within a certain number of minutes—it's to give your baby enough time to feel comfortable so we can capture happy, natural expressions and genuine moments throughout the experience. ❤️

Please complete the contact form on my website and include your preferred session dates, your baby’s birthday, and any theme or color ideas you have in mind. I will respond within 24 hours to discuss availability and session details.
If you need a weekend appointment, please reserve your session as early as possible, as weekend availability is limited. Weekday sessions generally offer greater scheduling flexibility.
Because babies’ nap and meal schedules can change quickly at this age, the session start time may be adjusted slightly after booking when weekday availability allows. Our goal is to photograph your baby when they are well-rested, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the experience.
After the initial inquiry, most communication will take place by text message, as it is generally the quickest and most efficient way to plan your session.
Please avoid calling before submitting the contact form. I may be unable to answer while photographing a session, and the high volume of unsolicited calls can make it difficult to identify a new client’s phone call. Providing your name and phone number through the form ensures that I recognize your number and can respond promptly.
Once the date and session details are confirmed, you will receive a booking link to reserve your date and begin planning your Cake Smash & Splash Session.

A $200 retainer plus applicable sales tax is required to reserve your session date. The remaining balance for the Cake Smash & Splash Session is due on the date of the session.
If you add family or sibling portraits, you do not need to pay for those images on the session date. A separate proof gallery will be provided after the session so you can select your favorites. The family portrait portion will be invoiced after your selections are submitted, and the selected images will be professionally retouched and delivered with your final cake smash gallery.

The cake is not included in the session fee. Because food allergies and dietary needs vary from baby to baby, families normally provide their own cake so they can choose a trusted bakery and ingredients that are appropriate for their child.
Please review the complete ingredient list and confirm any known food allergies or sensitivities before the session. A cake smash should not be your baby’s first exposure to ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction.
If purchasing or transporting a cake is difficult - especially if you are traveling from out of town - I may be able to purchase one from a nearby bakery on your behalf with advance notice. You will be asked to:
Approve the bakery and cake design
Sign a food-allergy and liability waiver
Reimburse the actual cost of the cake
Please understand that the photographer cannot prepare the cake or guarantee that a third-party bakery’s products are free from allergens or cross-contamination. Cake purchase assistance is an optional courtesy service and must be arranged before the session.
The cake does not need to be fancy or expensive! A simple 4–6 inch cake usually photographs beautifully for most themes and is the perfect size for a one-year-old cake smash. -
Yes. Our studio wardrobe includes a large selection of baby outfits in different sizes, colors, and styles, with plenty of options available for your Cake Smash & Splash Session. I will help you select an outfit that coordinates beautifully with your chosen backdrop, props, and overall theme.
You are also welcome to bring a personalized outfit, such as a special birthday outfit or something with sentimental meaning. Please send the photographer a photo of the outfit before the session so we can confirm that its colors, style, and fit will work well with the selected setup.
For most sessions, I recommend using one coordinated outfit for both the clean portraits and the beginning of the cake smash. This creates a consistent, cohesive gallery and makes the final images easier to display together in an album, wall collection, or birthday photo décor.
If you prefer different outfits for the clean portraits and cake smash portions, an outfit change is also possible. Both outfits should be approved in advance and coordinate with the same backdrop so the full gallery maintains a polished and consistent look.
-
Yes! Twin Cake Smash & Splash Sessions are available at the same $500 session price, with no additional fee for the second baby.
The session is carefully planned to give both babies enough room to play, explore, and interact. Before introducing the cake, we photograph the twins together and individually so the final gallery captures both their special connection and their unique personalities.
In most cases, one shared cake is all you need. The twins can sit on opposite sides of the cake, allowing both babies to participate while creating a balanced composition and plenty of natural interaction.
Two separate cakes are usually unnecessary unless there is a special reason, such as different food allergies or dietary needs, or if the family specifically prefers an individual cake for each baby.
The studio has a large wardrobe selection and can provide coordinating outfits for both babies. However, identical outfits in the same size are not guaranteed. If perfectly matching outfits are important to you, you are welcome to bring your own. Please send a photo before the session so we can confirm that the colors and style coordinate with the selected theme and backdrop.
Please mention that you are planning a twin session when submitting your inquiry so we can discuss the setup, cake, outfits, and any family or sibling portrait combinations in advance.
-
Your Cake Smash & Splash package includes the full photographer-selected gallery, typically consisting of 30–40 professionally edited digital images. There is no proofing or image-selection process for the cake smash portion. Once editing is complete, the entire final gallery will be delivered directly to you.
If you need the full gallery by a specific date for a birthday party, invitation, or another special purpose, please ask whether expedited editing is available. Rush delivery depends on the photographer’s current workload and cannot always be guaranteed.
When the schedule allows, I am often happy to complete the gallery earlier at no additional charge. During busy seasons, a small rush editing fee may apply to cover the additional editing time required. Any applicable fee and estimated delivery date will be confirmed with you in advance.

Yes! If you have a theme that is not currently available in the studio, I may be able to create a completely customized setup for your baby.
Please contact me at least one to two months before your preferred session date. A new theme requires additional time to research the design, locate and order a suitable backdrop, coordinate colors, and purchase any theme-specific props or accessories. Early planning is especially important because customized items may require additional production and shipping time.
An additional customization fee may apply when a requested theme requires the purchase of a new backdrop or specialty props, particularly when those items are highly personalized and unlikely to be reused for future sessions.
Every request is evaluated individually based on the availability of suitable materials, preparation time, and the cost of the required items. Any customization fee will be discussed and approved before purchases are made, so there will be no unexpected charges.
