I often hear from parents who would love newborn photographs but were never quite sure when to schedule them. By the time they reach out, their baby is already three or four weeks old -or a little older.
Some assumed they should wait until their baby was a month old. Others simply did not know that newborn sessions are often booked during pregnancy and photographed shortly after birth.
A question that often follows is: “Is it too late?”
No - one month is not too old for newborn photos.
While the first two weeks are often recommended for sleepy, curled-up portraits, babies do not all follow the same schedule. Some one-month-olds still sleep deeply and settle just like younger newborns. Others are more alert, so we may include more wrapped portraits, awake expressions, and photographs in your arms.
If you are only learning about newborn photography now, you have not missed your chance. We can plan a session around your baby as they are today.
The First Few Weeks Do Not Always Go as Planned
Even when parents know about the recommended timing, life with a newborn can change their plans.
Recovery, feeding, sleepless nights, and getting to know your baby can fill every hour. Perhaps you had an extended hospital stay, needed more time before leaving home, or simply had other priorities.
You do not need to apologize for any of that.
If one month is when you feel ready, we can start there. Your baby is still little, and there is so much about this stage worth remembering.
Why Are the First Two Weeks Often Recommended?
The early days can be a helpful window for the sleepy, curled-up portraits commonly associated with newborn photography. Babies may settle into those positions more readily, which is why many photographers recommend photographing within the first two weeks.
But that recommendation describes a helpful window for a particular style of posing. It does not mean you can no longer have beautiful baby photographs afterward.
Age alone cannot tell us how a session will go. Some one-month-old babies sleep comfortably through much of their session, allowing us to photograph them much as we would a younger newborn. Others prefer being wrapped or held.
We follow your baby’s comfort and responses rather than expecting every baby of the same age to behave alike.
What Might Be Different at One Month?
We May Include More Wrapped Portraits
If your baby is sleeping lightly or waking easily, we may spend more time on wrapped poses. A comfortable wrap can help some babies settle and allows us to create portraits without depending on the deep sleep needed for certain unwrapped poses.
Wrapped portraits can still offer plenty of variety. Different colors, textures, angles, and styling details help create a coordinated gallery while keeping your baby comfortably supported.
Your Arms Can Be the Best Place to Settle
Parent and family portraits are another lovely option when your baby is not deeply asleep.
With Mom or Dad holding and supporting them, we can often continue photographing while your baby is lightly sleeping or quietly awake. Being close to you may help them settle, and we can gently adjust their position within your arms.
These photographs also preserve something individual portraits cannot: how small your baby looks against your chest, the way they fit in your hands, and your connection during these first weeks together.
Immediate family and sibling portraits can be included in your newborn session, giving us more ways to document this chapter.
We May Capture More Awake Expressions
As babies get older, they may spend more of the session awake. Your gallery might include more open-eyed portraits, little stretches, and changing expressions alongside any sleepy photographs we capture.
A quiet, curious look can become a favorite image. So can a little hand resting near their face or an expression you already recognize from your everyday moments together.
Your baby does not need to sleep throughout the session for us to create photographs you will love.
How Long Will the Session Take?
Please allow around three hours for your newborn session, including time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and cuddles.
The session time is the same whichever image collection you eventually choose. We work gently within that time, adapting the photographs to your baby rather than trying to complete a fixed list of poses.
If your baby needs a break, we pause. If a setup is not working comfortably, we can simplify it, try a wrapped portrait, or move to photographs in your arms.
We make room for patience without extending the session indefinitely to keep trying for more images. A very long session can become tiring for everyone and leave parents feeling anxious, especially when they are recovering and short on sleep.
Choose Your Collection After Seeing Your Photographs
One benefit of my current newborn collections is that you do not need to decide how many photographs to purchase before your session.
Previously, families chose a package in advance based on the number of images they wanted. Now, you can review your proof gallery first and then choose the collection that suits you: A $300 non-refundable retainer reserves your session and is applied toward your selected collection’s total price.
If your baby needs more comforting and we create a smaller variety of portraits, you have the flexibility to choose a smaller collection. If you fall in love with a wider selection, you can choose a larger one. A larger collection means more finished images - not a longer photography session. There is no pressure to commit to a larger image count before knowing how your baby will feel that day, or to stay longer simply to create more photographs. Once you submit your selections, your chosen images will receive detailed professional retouching.
Enough to Remember This Chapter
It is natural to arrive with favorite poses in mind. But you do not need every pose, every setup, or every possible combination for your photographs to be meaningful. A small collection can hold so much: your baby’s face, their tiny details, a peaceful wrapped portrait, and the way you hold them. Beautiful photographs matter, and so does your family’s experience. Sometimes a comfortable session and a thoughtful selection of images are all you need to preserve this stage. My goal is for you to leave with meaningful memories of your baby and to feel that your family was cared for throughout the experience.
How to Prepare for Your One-Month-Old’s Session
Bring your usual feeding supplies, extra diapers, a change of clothes, and a pacifier if your baby uses one. Newborn wraps, outfits, and photography props are provided in the studio.
There is no need to force a different feeding or sleep routine to try to achieve a particular photograph. We will work with your baby’s needs on the day.
You Have Not Missed Your Chance
Your baby may be a little older than you originally planned for photographs. They are still small enough to fit in your arms in a way they will not forever.
Whether we capture sleepy poses, wrapped portraits, open-eyed expressions, or more moments together, the photographs will reflect your baby as they are now.
