Nautical Cake Smash & Splash: A First Birthday in DFW
A little plane to push, a cake to taste, and water to splash—this birthday boy had plenty to do during his nautical cake smash session!
Soft blue balloons, a sailboat, an anchor, and a little lighthouse set the scene. But as soon as he arrived in his blue-and-white outfit, the real fun was watching what he decided to explore first.
Portraits Before the Cake
We began with a few clean portraits. He crawled across the set, found the little wooden plane, and stopped to investigate a soft basket. Those first photos captured everything from a wide-eyed look at the camera to a smile as he leaned forward to play.
I love including portraits at the start of a first birthday session. They give families a chance to remember their baby’s face and expressions before the frosting makes its entrance.
A Taste of Birthday Cake
Then it was time for cake. He sat beside it for a moment, reached in, and discovered the frosting. Soon he had a little on his fingers and around his mouth—and the best part was watching him decide whether to go back for more.
Cake smash photos are always more fun when babies can explore at their own pace. A curious look, one careful taste, or a frosting-covered grin can say just as much as a completely smashed cake.
Splash Time Sets Sail
After cake, we changed to the white tub for splash photos. He looked around the nautical set from his new seat, played with a bath toy, and stretched his hand up toward the falling water. One splash even caught him by surprise, giving us a wonderfully funny expression to end the gallery.
That’s what I love about a cake smash and splash session: it tells the whole story of this age. In one visit, we captured his curiosity, his first-birthday cake adventure, and the joy of simply playing in the water.
